Springer-Macedonia Cemetery

In the year 1969 Mr. Oscar M. Dinkins gave Lil Kobs the following information on the cemetery originally named "SPRINGER":

The Springer Cemetery is located in the Samuel C. Neil Survey. It was named "Springer" in honor of Mr. A. E. Springer who donated this plot of ground for a burial site in about 1860. Mr. Springer was buried here September 8, 1882; however the first internment of record was made in 1871.

In November 1976 Dr. Mildred W. Abshier made the following additions to Mr. Dinkins' account.

The original Springer plot has been enlarged by land gifts and sales. A strip, approximately forty-five feet wide along the entire east side, was a gift from Doctors Gilbert and Mary Fletcher. Subsequently to this the Fletchers sold to the Cemetery Association, for a sum of one hundred dollars, one acre on the north side of the burial plot which now serves as a parking area.

In 1950 L. L. Dinkins and wife, Edgar Ellen, gave the right-of-way for the present road that leads from Macedonia Road to the Cemetery. Prior to this Mr. Dinkins caused the grounds to be enlarged by donating an area approximately thirty-five yards wide across the entire south end of the original plot.

At some time about the mid 1950's, the Springer-Macedonia Cemetery Association was formed to perpetuate the care of the Cemetery, and at this time was re-named Springer-Macedonia Cemetery - the name appears thus over the gate, with the date 1860. Cemetery care is financed by the proceeds of an annual barbecue and by personal donations.
